Cold r-Process in Neutrino-Driven Winds

open access: yes, 2007
The r-process in a low temperature environment is explored, in which the neutron emission by photodisintegration does not play a role (cold r-process). A semi-analytic neutrino-driven wind model is utilized for this purpose.

Menthol‐like cooling compounds, including (R)‐(‐)‐carvone, inhibit the human bitter taste receptors for saccharin and acesulfame K

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We report that some menthol‐like cooling compounds, including (R)‐(‐)‐carvone, act as inhibitors of TAS2R31 and TAS2R43, which are taste receptors responsible for the intrinsic bitter aftertastes of saccharin and acesulfame K. However, there was little correlation between the intensity of the cooling sensation and the potency of bitterness inhibition ...

Synergistic effect of cold atmospheric plasma and methylene blue loaded nano micelles on treating human glioblastoma cells: An in vitro and molecular dynamics study [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences
Objective(s): One of the most recent cancer treatment methods is cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), which destroys cancer cells without affecting healthy cells. Also, the created photons in the CAP flame can be used to excite a proper photosensitizing agent (

Microbial profile of the appendix niche in acute appendicitis: a novel sampling approach

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study utilized a novel sampling method, ERAT (i.e. endoscopic retrograde appendicitis treatment)‐guided lumen aspiration, to obtain samples from the appendix, and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed for in situ characterization of the appendix microbiome in patients with acute appendicitis.

Effects of Diets with Different Energy Levels at Cold Temperatures on Gut Microbiota and Metabolic State in Growing–Finishing Pigs

open access: yesMicroorganisms
In cold-temperature regions, particularly on family farms, threats to livestock health constrain the potential of livestock husbandry. This study aimed to explore the effects of different dietary energy levels, adjusted by oil addition, on gut microbiota

Photochemistry and gas exchange in cold conditions in Zn-deficient red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. rubra) plants

open access: yesFolia Horticulturae, 2012
The responses of red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. rubra) plants to a low Zn supply and cold conditions (10°/7°C day/night temperature) were investigated in a hydroponic growing medium.

Structural and functional characterization of chitinase from carnivorous plant Drosera adelae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A class I chitinase from the carnivorous plant Drosera adelae was expressed and purified using a yeast system, revealing high enzymatic activity. Structural analyses of the catalytic and chitin‐binding domains identified key tyrosine residues involved in substrate binding, offering insights into the enzyme's adaptation for insect digestion.

Indices of adrenal cortical activity in men exposed to cold [PDF]

open access: yes, 1951
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityEvidence of physiological acclimatization of man to cold is scanty and not clear-cut. Certainly no adaptations have been described comparable to the dramatic changes which occur when men are acclimatized to heat.
