Beyond species means – the intraspecific contribution to global wood density variation
New Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 6, Page 2630-2651, March 2026.Summary
Wood density is central for estimating vegetation carbon storage and a plant functional trait of great ecological and evolutionary importance. However, the global extent of wood density variation is unclear, especially at the intraspecific level. We assembled the most comprehensive wood density collection to date, including 109 626 records from Fabian Jörg Fischer, Jérôme Chave, Amy Zanne, Tommaso Jucker, Alex Fajardo, Adeline Fayolle, Renato Augusto Ferreira de Lima, Ghislain Vieilledent, Hans Beeckman, Wannes Hubau, Tom De Mil, Daniel Wallenus, Ana María Aldana, Esteban Alvarez‐Dávila, Luciana F. Journal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.We found a positive, non‐linear, saturating relationship between mainland and island leaf sizes, reflecting an island rule‐like pattern. Small‐leaved mainland species tend to develop larger leaves on islands, while this effect weakens for larger‐leaved species, a pattern consistent across both conspecific and congeneric comparisons. Conservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.Abstract
Marine megafauna species are affected by a wide range of anthropogenic threats. To evaluate the risk of such threats, species’ vulnerability to each threat must first be determined. We build on the existing threats classification scheme and ranking system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened ...Michelle VanCompernolle, Juliet Morris, Hannah J. Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental, Volume 41, Issue 1, January 2026.ABSTRACT Background
Anxiolytic medications, particularly benzodiazepines, are widely prescribed, giving impetus to long‐standing debates about how often these agents should be employed in clinical practice. There are, however, few cross‐country studies of the pharmacoepidemiology of these agents. We report on the frequency of anxiolytic medication use, Dan J. Stein, Alan E. Kazdin, David S. International Journal of Gynecology &Obstetrics, Volume 172, Issue 1, Page 25-50, January 2026.Abstract
Mid‐trimester pregnancy loss (MTL), defined as a pregnancy loss occurring between 14 + 0 and 21 + 6 weeks of gestation, causes significant physical and emotional distress to women and presents clinical challenges to healthcare professionals. It is acknowledged that in low‐resource settings, this guideline might be applicable to births up to 28 Caroline E. Systematic Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 1, January‐March 2026.A subgeneric classification is proposed for Triepeolus—the second‐largest genus of cleptoparasitic apid bees in the world—and its sister genus Epeolus, with support from a newly presented dated phylogeny.
