Some aspects of geotropism in coleoptiles

Planta, 1970
Auxin transport was studied in coleoptile sections that were stimulated geotropically. The early time course of auxin-transport asymmetry was measured. An initial phase in which more IAA was delivered into the receptor for the upper half was found after 5 min of horizontal exposure.

Coleoptile Growth: Variation in Elongation Patterns of Individual Coleoptiles

Annals of Botany, 1971
Etiolated coleoptiles of barley differ in rate of growth and the time during germination when most rapid growth occurs. The final heights of coleoptiles fall into these classes: (1) short, ^ 10 mm, (2) medium, ^ 20 mm, and (3) tall, > 30 mm. Tall coleoptiles are produced by coleoptiles that show rapid growth, ^ 800 /z/h, in one of three periods, i.e ...

Expansins and coleoptile elongation in wheat

Protoplasma, 2008
Expansins are now generally accepted to be the key regulators of wall extension during plant growth. The aim of this study was to characterize expansins in wheat coleoptiles and determine their roles in regulating cell growth. Endogenous and reconstituted wall extension activities of wheat coleoptiles were measured. The identification of beta-expansins

Auxin movement in corn coleoptiles

Planta, 1968
Movement of radioactive auxins was analysed in corn coleoptile sections. The results support the idea that processes involved in the transport of indoleacetic acid (IAA) are specific for growth-promoting auxins.Inhibition of IAA transport by triiodobenzoic acid is caused by a reversible block of the exit; the auxin held back remains in the transport ...

Plastids of the Avena Coleoptile

Nature, 1960
PHOTOTROPIC curvature of the Avena coleoptile may, for reasons which have been summarized elsewhere1, be mediated through the plastids. Geotropic curvature may have a similar basis, for it has long been thought2,3 that the geotropic responses of both shoots and roots are mediated by special starch grains or ‘statoliths’, and these in fact are plastids ...

THE INFLUENCE OF AUXIN ON RESPIRATION OF THE AVENA COLEOPTILE

American Journal of Botany, 1946
VARIOUS GROSS effects of auxins on plant growth are easily demonstrated and are well known. The exact mechanism, however, by which these changes are initiated still is obscure. A close connection between growth and respiration is almost axiomatic, and Bonner in 1936 demonstrated that such a close relationship existed in the Avena coleoptile.

HISTOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE COLEOPTILE. I. TISSUE AND CELL TYPES IN THE COLEOPTILE TIP

American Journal of Botany, 1965
The uppermost 1‐4 mm of 25‐mm coleoptiles of oats and wheat have been studied at the optical microscope level, using newer histological methods and sections 1‐4 μ thick. The outer epidermal wall, which shows very fine wrinkling, is continuous with the thinner wall of the inner epidermis through the pore.

Glucanase activity in coleoptiles of Avena

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1969
Abstract The presence of five different β-glucanases has been investigated in coleoptiles of Avena with the use of specific substrates. A high activity of β-1,3-glucanase is found associated with the coleoptiles. With regard to β-1,4-glucanase activity a strong activity of exo -cellulase which splits glucose (or cellobiose) from the end of the ...

Polyamines and Anaerobic Elongation of Rice Coleoptile

Plant and Cell Physiology, 1989
