Predicting Explorative Behavior by Level of Emotional Reactivity in Bobwhite Quail Neonates (Colinus virginianus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Tests of emotional reactivity have been used in a broad range of basic and applied research and have been primarily concerned with how rearing conditions, particularly environmental enrichment, can affect reactivity.

Female biased offspring sex ratios of eastern wild turkeys across the southeastern United States

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 5, September 2025.
Prevailing theory suggests that sex ratios of offspring at birth should not differ from parity if costs of producing offspring of both sexes are similar. However, offspring sex ratios may deviate from parity when there is sex specific variation in fitness returns. We assessed offspring sex ratios of eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)

Caudal Distraction by Rat Snakes (Colubridae, Elaphe): a Novel Behavior Used when Capturing Mammalian Prey [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Caudal movement in snakes may serve either a predatory (e.g., caudal luring) or defensive (eg., rattling, aposematism) function. I describe a new behavioral pattern of tail movement in snakes. Gray rat snakes (Elaphe obsoleta spiloides) foraging on small

Egg-Laying Cycle Characteristics of the Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus)

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1973
Abstract Egg sequence length, egg production rate, time of oviposition, lag-time and rate of ovum growth were determined for the Bobwhite hen. Hen-housed egg production was 38.9% with an average sequence length of 4.6 eggs when measured over an eight-month production period. The peak period of oviposition was from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (EST).

Northern bobwhite autumn and winter food habits in restored pine–bluestem habitats

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2016
We determined autumn and winter food habits of hunter‐harvested northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus; n = 388) over 11 years (1998–2009) in a matrix of restored shortleaf pine–bluestem (Pinus echinata–Andropogon–Schizachyrium), and unthinned and ...

Emotional Reactivity is Reduced Following Early Postnatal Exposure to a Novel Stimulus in Bobwhite Quail Chicks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Neophobia, the fear of novelty, is a behavioral trait displayed by many animal species, in which novel stimuli are perceived to have aversive properties. This is typically associated with an increase in emotional reactivity (i.e. fearfulness).
