A cost assessment of intensive wild quail management on private lands in the southeastern United States

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, 2023
Private landowners who operate multifunctional landscapes play a critical role in the conservation of native and imperiled species, and the restoration of native ecosystems.

A Modified Suture Technique for Attaching Radiotransmitters to Northern Bobwhite Chicks

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2020
Reliable and unbiased information is needed for informing management decisions relevant to all animal life stages. Radiomarking is commonly used for adult birds, but this approach is more challenging for galliform chicks.

Trophic interactions between primary consumers appear to weaken during periods of synchrony

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
Our understanding of synchrony between populations from different taxonomic groups has been centered on predator–prey dynamics in simple systems but has rarely been examined in complex predator–prey systems.

Baylisascaris sp. Found in a Wild Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 1997
During a telemetry study conducted between 1993 and 1995 in east-central Kansas (USA) on northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations, a wild adult male quail was found with signs of disorientation and torticollis in August 1994 in Lyon County, Kansas.

Temperature Regulation Development in Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus)

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1973
Abstract Two experiments were designed to investigate the development of temperature regulation in Bobwhite quail. In experiment 1, eight groups of chicks were tested at 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days of age. Body temperatures showed a curvilinear trend, increasing from 1 to 20 days and then decreasing to 30 days of age.

Responses of white‐tailed deer and northern bobwhite food plants to a gradient of stand‐establishment intensities in pocosin pine plantations

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2012
Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantations are established using various treatments to manage competing vegetation and increase pine production. Although young pine plantations historically supported early successional vegetation communities that contained ...

Inadequate thermal refuge constrains landscape habitability for a grassland bird species [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2017
Ecologists have long recognized the influence that environmental conditions have on abundance and range extent of animal species. We used the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; hereafter bobwhite) as a model species for studying how microclimates ...

Raptor selection of captive reared and released Galliform birds

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2018
Captive rearing and release of birds in the order Galliformes remains a popular management tactic despite low survival rates. We investigated avian predator selection of captive‐reared northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) as a potential driver of ...

Testing radiotransmitter attachment techniques on northern bobwhite and chukar chicks

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2011
We compared 4 external radiotransmitter attachment techniques to determine the optimum attachment method on chicks of 2 galliform species. The attachment methods included tissue glue, silicone gel, suturing, and leg harness.

Estimating crippling loss from hunting with multistate models: a case study on northern bobwhites

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Hunting as a recreational pursuit provides an important ecosystem service worldwide. Harvest management plays a vital role in regulating wildlife take to ensure long‐term population sustainability and meet value‐based objectives (e.g. hunter satisfaction). However, managers rarely have complete control or observability of harvest mortality.
