Herpetofauna Richness, Diversity, and Occurrence at the Northern Ecotone of Longleaf Pine

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 9, September 2025.
The longleaf pine ecosystem is recognized for its value in providing habitat to a variety of specialist and endemic species, especially herpetofauna; however, at the northernmost ecotone of longleaf pine (in southeastern Virginia) little is known about the denizen reptiles and amphibians.

Incubation behaviour in a double‐nesting alpine bird Alectoris graeca saxatilis: similar nest attendance by males and females

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 5, September 2025.
In birds with double‐nesting and uniparental incubation, such as the rock partridge Alectoris graeca saxatilis, the male incubates one clutch, while the female incubates the other. A previous study found no significant difference in hatching and predation rates on Alpine rock partridge nests incubated by each sex.

Effects of broadcasting supplemental feed into roadside vegetation on home range and survival of female northern bobwhite

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2015
Declines in northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have led landowners in Texas, USA, to develop various management strategies to combat waning abundance.

Population Status and Trends of Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) in Ohio: 1984- 2004 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Author Institution: Terrestrial Wildlife Ecology Laboratory, School of Environment and Natural Resources, The Ohio State UniversityWe assessed the status and trends of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations in Ohio from 1984-2004 (21 years).

MicroRNA and messenger RNA profiling reveals new biomarkers and mechanisms for RDX induced neurotoxicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background RDX is a well-known pollutant to induce neurotoxicity. MicroRNAs (miRNA) and messenger RNA (mRNA) profiles are useful tools for toxicogenomics studies.

Female biased offspring sex ratios of eastern wild turkeys across the southeastern United States

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 5, September 2025.
Prevailing theory suggests that sex ratios of offspring at birth should not differ from parity if costs of producing offspring of both sexes are similar. However, offspring sex ratios may deviate from parity when there is sex specific variation in fitness returns. We assessed offspring sex ratios of eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)

Factors affecting trapping success of northern bobwhites in the rolling plains of Texas

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2016
Trapping of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) is commonly conducted for research purposes. We investigated the influence of weather, lunar phase, time of day, and season on bobwhite trapping success in the Rolling Plains ecoregion of Texas, USA ...

Can Intersensory Redundancy and Social Contingency Enhance Memory in Bobwhite Quail Hatchlings? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Recent findings indicate that bimodal-redundant stimulation promotes perceptual learning and recruits attention to amodal properties in non-human as well as human infants.

Northern bobwhite autumn and winter food habits in restored pine–bluestem habitats

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2016
We determined autumn and winter food habits of hunter‐harvested northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus; n = 388) over 11 years (1998–2009) in a matrix of restored shortleaf pine–bluestem (Pinus echinata–Andropogon–Schizachyrium), and unthinned and ...

Emotional Reactivity is Reduced Following Early Postnatal Exposure to a Novel Stimulus in Bobwhite Quail Chicks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Neophobia, the fear of novelty, is a behavioral trait displayed by many animal species, in which novel stimuli are perceived to have aversive properties. This is typically associated with an increase in emotional reactivity (i.e. fearfulness).
