Microscopic colitis is a relatively common cause of chronic watery diarrhea, often accompanied by abdominal pain and weight loss. The colonic mucosa appears normal grossly, and the diagnosis is made when there is an intraepithelial lymphocytosis and a mixed inflammatory infiltrate in the lamina propria.

The Netherlands journal of medicine, 2009Chronic diarrhoea is a frequent complaint in clinical practice. Microscopic colitis is the cause of this symptom in 10% of these cases and the prevalence is rising. To exclude microscopic colitis a colonoscopy with multiple biopsies of different regions of the colon is mandatory. A sigmoidoscopy alone is insufficient.
