The Structure of Fibril‐forming Collagens

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1985
Although collagen molecules are designed primarily to serve as constituents of supporting aggregates in various tissues, they are present as a relatively large family of proteins that exhibit a wide diversity in structural and chemical features. Molecular diversity is, of course, specified primarily by the different genes for synthesis of the various ...

Collagen Fibril Structure Is Affected by Collagen Concentration and Decorin

Biomacromolecules, 2007
Collagen fibrils were obtained in vitro by aggregation from acid-soluble type I collagen at different initial concentrations and with the addition of decorin core or intact decorin. All specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Molecular packing in collagen fibrils

Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 1976
In this chapter I will discuss the three-dimensional arrangement of collagen molecules in the fibrils of connective tissue. This is a problem of quite general significance since the nature of the molecular packing in similar systems such as the fibrils of muscles and other biological fibers is still unknown.

Micromechanical Testing of Individual Collagen Fibrils

Macromolecular Bioscience, 2006
AbstractSummary: A novel method based on AFM was used to attach individual collagen fibrils between a glass surface and the AFM tip, to allow force spectroscopy studies of these. The fibrils were deposited on glass substrates that are partly coated with Teflon AF®.

On Collagen Fibril Diameter Distributions

Connective Tissue Research, 1991
Distributions of collagen fibril diameters, measured from electron micrographs, are compared using some of the common measures of the mean of the distribution. The role of mixture distributions in modelling these distributions is considered and a method of fitting such distributions to data observed in the form of histograms is described. The method is

The structure and assembly of collagen fibrils*: I. Native‐collagen fibrils and their formation from tropocollagen

Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society, 1967
SYNOPSISHypotheses to explain the formation of native‐collagen fibrils from tropocollagen macromolecules have been considered and their inconsistencies examined. A new model for the tropocollagen macromolecule is suggested and a new mechanism for its assembly into native‐collagen fibrils is offered. It is postulated that the tropocollagen macromolecule

Structure of Collagen Fibrils

1985
Three clear features of the structure of collagen fibrils are recognised and probably not seriously disputed: i) Axially, the molecules — roughly 300nm long and 1.0nm in diameter — are related by staggers of integral multiples of approximately 67nm; call this distance D.
