Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Vaidya Collapse with Nonzero Radial Pressure and Charge [PDF]

open access: yesAxioms, 2020
The cosmic censorship hypothesis is regarded as one of the most important unsolved problems in classical general relativity; viz., will generic gravitational collapse of a star after it has exhausted its nuclear fuel lead to black holes only, under reasonable physical conditions.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Investigating the impact of imperfections around a wellbore on liner deformation during hydraulic fracturing

open access: yesFrontiers in Mechanical Engineering
It is essential to maintain the integrity of liner–cement–formation in the well completion and production stages. However, large liner deformations have been extensively experienced during hydraulic fracturing operations in carbonate formations.

Magnetic Collapse and the Behavior of Transition Metal Oxides at High Pressure

open access: yes, 2016
We report a detail theoretical study of the electronic structure and phase stability of transition metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO in their paramagnetic cubic B1 structure by employing dynamical mean-field theory of correlated electrons combined with

Lessons Learned From a Delayed‐Start Trial of Modafinil for Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) is debilitating and has limited treatments. Modafinil modulates beta/gamma band activity in the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), like PPN deep brain stimulation. We therefore tested the hypothesis that Modafinil would improve FOG in PwPD.

Prediction and Application of Pore Pressure in Guangming Structure Formation of Hetao Basin

open access: yesCejing jishu
To ensure drilling safety and optimize reservoir evaluation in ultra-deep and high-pressure formations of the Guangming structure in the Hetao basin, solve accidents such as overflow and collapse caused by inaccurate pore pressure prediction, and support

Analysis of Collapse Pressure Performance of Ultra-High Pressure Perforating Gun under Different Blind Hole Depths

open access: yesShiyou jixie, 2021
For the blind hole depth, outer diameter ellipticity and wall thickness unevenness that affect the collapse performance of ultra-high pressure perforating gun, an ideal geometric model and a model with geometric defects of ultra-high pressure perforating

Gravitational collapse from smooth initial data with vanishing radial pressure

open access: yes, 2004
We study here the spherical gravitational collapse assuming initial data to be necessarily smooth, as motivated by the requirements based on physical reasonableness. A tangential pressure model is constructed and analyzed in order to understand the final

Testing a Personalized Approach to Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Older Veterans

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We aimed to test the efficacy of personalized treatment of older veterans with chronic low back pain (CLBP) delivered by Aging Back Clinics (ABCs) as compared with usual care (UC). Methods Two hundred ninety‐nine veterans aged 65 to 89 with CLBP from three Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers underwent baseline testing, randomization to ABC ...
