Abstract Collapsible soils present significant geotechnical and structural engineering challenges the world over. They can be found in many forms – either naturally occurring or formed through human activities. However, an essential prerequisite is that an open metastable structure develops through various bonding mechanisms.

Evaluation and Control of Collapsible Soils
Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1992Some compacted soils wetted under certain conditions of compaction and loading may exhibit additional settlement (collapse). To investigate the effect of the soil type, compaction water content, initial dry unit weight and applied pressure at wetting on collapse potential, 138 single‐oedometer tests were conducted on eight different soils.

Characterization of Collapsible Soils
IFCEE 2015, 2015Collapsible soils are generally considered to be soils that settle upon wetting and loading. Settlement of collapsible soils is a common problem particularly in arid and semi-arid regions of the United States because these soils exist at very low moisture contents in their natural environment.

Sample Disturbance of Cemented Collapsible Soils
Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1991A comprehensive study of sample disturbance effects on the response of collapsible soils was performed. Block samples and various factors potentially affecting degree of disturbance were studied. It was found that the effect of tube length was statistically insignificant for lengths up to 305 mm for 71 mm diameter specimens, and likewise for sampler ...

Soils which collapse (undergo large consolidation) when unusual amounts of water are added to them exist in many places around the world. Contrary to the ideas of many observers these collapsing soils derive from many different soil forming processes. Although surface collapse of 15 ft has occurred, the usual amount is considerably less.

Egyptian Collapsible Soils and Their Improvement
GeoCongress 2008, 2008Large expansion in constructing new cities in the desert outside the traditionally inhibited Nile Delta and Valley has been going on since the reopening of the Suez Canal in June 1975. Since then Egyptian geotechnical engineers have the challenge of dealing with totally new types of problematic soils in such arid and semi arid environment; of which ...

Prediction of collapse behaviour in soil
Revue Européenne de Génie Civil, 2007ABSTRACT The drastic decrease in volume of a natural, unsaturated soil deposit or compacted fill that occurs upon wetting at virtually constant total stresses is termed “collapse”. Several methods can be found in the literature that predict collapse behavior based on easily obtained soil parameters.
