Collective Optimization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Iterative compilation is an efficient approach to optimize programs on rapidly evolving hardware, but it is still only scarcely used in practice due to a necessity to gather a large number of runs often with the same data set and on the same environment in order to test many different optimizations and to select the most appropriate ones. Naturally, in

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae amino acid transporter Lyp1 has a broad substrate spectrum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast Amino acid Transporter family members mediate the import of amino acids, ranging from substrate specialists to generalists. Here, we show that the specialist transporter, Lyp1, has a broader substrate spectrum than previously described, with affinity constants spanning from micromolar to millimolar.

Finished Processing First Collection! [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Hello! On Tuesday I finally finished processing and organizing my first collection. On the left is my finished product, all labeled and organized. Processing this collection was a very enjoyable experience for me–I feel that I am the expert on this ...

Collected Essays

open access: yes, 1893
Known as 'Darwin's Bulldog', the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95) was a tireless supporter of the evolutionary theories of his friend Charles Darwin. Huxley also made his own significant scientific contributions, and he was influential in the development of science education despite having had only two years of formal schooling.

The cytoskeletal control of B cell receptor and integrin signaling in normal B cells and chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In lymphoid organs, antigen recognition and B cell receptor signaling rely on integrins and the cytoskeleton. Integrins act as mechanoreceptors, couple B cell receptor activation to cytoskeletal remodeling, and support immune synapse formation as well as antigen extraction.

A 4-Approximation Algorithm for k-Prize Collecting Steiner Tree Problems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
This paper studies a 4-approximation algorithm for k-prize collecting Steiner tree problems. This problem generalizes both k-minimum spanning tree problems and prize collecting Steiner tree problems. Our proposed algorithm employs two 2-approximation algorithms for k-minimum spanning tree problems and prize collecting Steiner tree problems.

The economics of garbage collection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper argues that economic theory can improve our understanding of memory management. We introduce the allocation curve, as an analogue of the demand curve from microeconomics.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...
