A method for capturing images of Collembola bioluminescence using a smartphone camera

open access: yesSoil Organisms
Although bioluminescence in Collembola has been known since 1851, photographic evidence remains sparse. Photographs serve as essential evidence to confirm bioluminescence and facilitate further investigations into this phenomenon.

Differential Phoretic Vector Use Among Sympatric Caenorhabditis Nematodes and an Association With Invasive Nitidulid Beetles in Southwestern Germany

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
We show evidence for differential host use among the three sympatric Caenorhabditis, and a novel association with nitidulid beetles for C. apta sp. n. This information adds to our understanding of host invertebrate use across the Caenorhabditis phylogeny, highlighting potential evolutionary transitions in host use in need of further study.

Gloger's Rule and Pigmentation of Collembola [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution, 1969
Pigmentation in warm-blooded animals has been related to latitude, temperature, humidity, rainfall, and solar radiation. The original observations by Gloger (1833) on the coloration of birds in relation to their geographical position have been confirmed for different species belonging to several taxa, though some important exceptions were pointed out ...

Collembola Community Structure as a Tool to Assess Land Use Effects on Soil Quality

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo
: Collembolan species are differently affected by soil tillage (conventional, minimum tillage, and no-tillage) and are known to modify plant growth. This study relies on the relationships between Collembola community structures and land use systems as a ...

Seasonal Dynamics of the Gut Microbiome in Urban Feral Pigeons Are Associated With Environmental Conditions, Not With Diet Shifts

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Using feral pigeons in urban environments, we show that microbiome diversity and composition vary seasonally despite stable diet composition. ABSTRACT Gut microbiomes play a crucial role in host physiology and seasonal adaptation. While seasonal shifts in avian gut microbiota are often attributed to seasonal diet variation, environmental factors may be
