The 3D Dynamics of a Wildfire Plume Extending Across the Top of the Planetary Boundary Layer Using an Airborne Doppler Lidar

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 11, 16 June 2025.
Abstract As wildfire pervasiveness increases with a changing climate, there is a need to develop new techniques with emerging technologies to understand the interaction between wildfires and the surrounding atmosphere at a high spatiotemporal resolution.

Investigation of Isobaric Mixing as a Mechanism for Boundary‐Layer Cloud Formation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 11, 16 June 2025.
Abstract This study investigates the potential role of isobaric mixing in the formation of marine boundary layer clouds. Cloud formation theory emphasizes uplift and adiabatic cooling, but recent observations support the existence of small clouds forming at various altitudes, even below the lifting condensation level.

Off‐Highway Vehicle Use Degrades a Mountain Stream: A Case Study Evaluating Recreation Impacts, Restoration Efficacy, and Assessing Vulnerability of Headwater Streams in the Central Rocky Mountains

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 5, Page 1044-1057, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Headwater streams are abundant in mountain landscapes and where municipal watersheds occur on public lands; they co‐occur with road networks open to off‐highway vehicle (OHV) use. Despite well‐known, deleterious interactions of roads and streams, few studies have empirically examined the biophysical impacts of OHV use where backcountry roads ...

Mapping of a Mid‐Depth Salinity Maximum Intrusion South of New England in June 2021 and Implications for Cross‐Shelf Exchange

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 130, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract The Northeast U.S. continental shelf is characterized by relatively cold and fresh shelf waters of Arctic origin, whereas the adjacent Slope Sea is home to warm and salty, Gulf Stream derived waters. These contrasting watermass properties form a strong Shelfbreak Front, which can act as dynamical barrier of exchange between onshore and ...

On the Extraordinary L‐Band Scintillation Event Observed in the American Sector During the 23–24 March 2023 Geomagnetic Storm

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 23, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract We report an extraordinary L‐band scintillation event detected in the American sector on the night of 23–24 March 2023. The event was detected using observations distributed from the magnetic equator to mid latitudes. The observations were made by ionospheric scintillation and total electron content (TEC) monitors deployed at the Jicamarca ...

Tropical Cyclone Surface Winds From Aircraft With a Neural Network

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 2, Issue 2, June 2025.
Abstract Estimates of the surface wind field in a tropical cyclone (TC) are required in real time by operational forecast centers to warn the public about potential impacts to life and property. In‐situ aircraft data must be adjusted from flight level to surface using wind reductions (WRs) since the aircraft cannot fly too low due to safety concerns ...

The artisanal underground: gold, subsistence, and subsurface materiality in Colombia

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 31, Issue 2, Page 353-375, June 2025.
Abstract This article focuses on subsurface materiality to explore how small‐scale gold miners in Colombia navigate formal politics. In much critical research, the underground appears as a space of great developmentalist ambition, whose resources enable corporate expansion and bureaucratic rule.

Mining and/in outer space: Verticality, analogy, and infrastructural mediation in subarctic Sweden Les mines et/dans l'espace : verticalité, analogie et médiation infrastructurelle dans les régions subarctiques de Suède

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 31, Issue 2, Page 605-625, June 2025.
Space activities in subarctic Sweden are predicated on older infrastructures of underground resource extraction. The ongoing expansion of the country's rocket launch site outside Kiruna relies on the Swedish state's historical construction of the region as a resource frontier.
