Self-assembly of silica colloidal crystal thin films with tuneable structural colours over a wide visible spectrum

open access: yes, 2016
Colloidal crystal (CC) thin films that produce structural colours over a wide visible spectrum have been self-assembled from silica nanoparticles (SNPs) using a natural sedimentation method.

Ambient‐Spray Ni–Cu(–O)/Ag Nanowire Transparent Heaters for High‐Temperature Heating and Far‐/Near‐Field EMI Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A vacuum‐free, ambient‐spray Ni–Cu(–O)/Ag nanowire transparent‐heater platform is realized via conformal junction‐shell engineering and silica–hybrid overcoating, enabling robust high‐temperature heating together with GHz‐band far‐field EMI shielding and near‐field magnetic‐noise attenuation.

Intermethod comparison of the particle size distributions of colloidal silica nanoparticles

open access: yesScience and Technology of Advanced Materials, 2014
There can be a large variation in the measured diameter of nanoparticles depending on which method is used. In this work, we have strived to accurately determine the mean particle diameter of 30–40 nm colloidal silica particles by using six different ...

Material Before Morphology: Substrate‐Dependent Mechanical Tuning of Radular Teeth

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Substrate‐dependent material tuning in Clausilia radular teeth. Closely related taxa retain a conserved gross tooth morphology, but differ in elemental composition and mechanical properties according to feeding substrate. Rock‐associated taxa show increased Ca–Si enrichment and higher stiffness and hardness, especially in the central radular region ...

Protein Corona Formation on Soft Nanocarriers Under Biomimetic Circulatory Flow

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A biomimetic venous circulation system is developed to study protein corona formation on soft nanocarriers under physiological shear. Liposomes, PLGA nanoparticles, and lipid‐polymer hybrid nanoparticles acquire largely shared but material‐dependent protein coronas that alter surface properties and suppress cellular uptake, highlighting the importance ...

Toxicity of colloidal silica nanoparticles administered orally for 90 days in rats

open access: yesInternational Journal of Nanomedicine, 2014
This study was undertaken to investigate the potential toxicity and establish the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) and target organ(s) of negatively charged colloidal silica particles of different sizes, ie, SiO2EN20(−) (20 nm) or SiO2EN100(−) 2 ...

Surfactants as a Tool for Coupling Light Into Hydrodynamic Flow: The Influence of Surfactant Hydrophobicity and Head Polarity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Reversible light‐induced gradients at solid–liquid interfaces enable controllable interfacial transport via light‐driven diffusioosmosis. We demonstrate directed particle manipulation based on dynamically generated concentration gradients. The mechanism is broadly applicable to cationic, anionic, and non‐ionic surfactants with varying hydrophobicity ...

Covalent Attachment of Quaternary Ammonium Group to Geopolymer Surface With Silane Coupling Agent to Enable Simultaneous Adsorption of Cations and Anions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Modification of geopolymer surface with a silane coupling agent containing quaternary ammonium group enables the development of dual‐functioning ion exchanger for both cations and anions. In the present study, the performance of this material was demonstrated for the uptake of ammonium and nitrate from water.
