Many of the serious complications of diverticulitis can be prevented by careful dietary and medical management instituted early in the disease. At least 80 per cent of cases of early diverticulitis can be successfully managed in this way. If surgical intervention is indicated, it is preferable to operate at a time when a one stage resection is feasible.

Abstract Diverticulitis is more common than is generally supposed. It should be kept in mind when considering obscure abdominal cases such as possible sigmoiditis, appendicitis, especially true transposed left-sided appendicitis, carcinoma, tuberculosis and some pelvic lesions. There are no characteristic symptoms known.

Diverticulitis of the ascending colon
The American Journal of Surgery, 1968Abstract Cecal diverticulitis is an unusual lesion and most surgeons have had little personal experience with it. Diagnosis, even at the time of operation, is difficult and consequently treatment is often inappropriate. A preoperative diagnosis of appendicitis and suspected malignancy at the time of operation are usual.

Diverticulitis of the right colon
The American Journal of Surgery, 1961Abstract Diverticulitis of the right colon is relatively rare, and it may occur at any age. However, since congential “true” diverticula are more common in the proximal colon, patients with this disease are on the average younger than those who have inflammation of acquired diverticula in the distal colon.

Management of Colonic Diverticulitis
2016Acute left colonic diverticulosis is common in Western countries, but its prevalence is increasing throughout the world. On one side left colonic diverticulosis is more common among elderly patients; on the other side, however, a dramatic rise of its incidence has been seen in the younger age groups during recent years.
