Tremellomycetes isolated from organs of Columba livia

open access: yesMedical Mycology, 2022
Abstract Brain, lungs, and intestines of Columba livia captured in Brazil were analyzed for research on Tremellomycetes. Mycological culture presented the growth of colonies suggestive of Cryptococcus spp. in 11.60% (13/112) of the samples. Microscopy revealed capsulated yeast cells.

Effects of Vector Density on Blood Parasite Spread and Health Consequences for Avian Hosts: An Experimental Epidemiology Blueprint

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
In an experimental epidemiology setup, groups of pigeons were exposed to different numbers of infective malaria vectors. Vector number explained the speed of transmission, the final prevalence, and changes in host behavior. ABSTRACT Vector density plays a critical role in the transmission dynamics of vector‐borne diseases and thus in their health and ...

Experimental Toxoplasmosis in Pigeons (Columba livia)

open access: yesAsian Journal of Research in Infectious Diseases, 2020
The purpose of the present study was to establish experimental model of toxoplasmosis in pigeons, to investigate pathogenesis and compare tissue lesions by clinical, histopathological, serological and bioassay techniques. Total of 60 unknown aged pigeons (Columba livia), 21 males and 39 females were used.

Effectiveness of territorial protection categories in conserving an endemic island bird during population fluctuation

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Static boundaries of protected areas failed to capture the Canary Islands stonechat's shifting distribution patterns. Abstract Protected areas represent cornerstones of biodiversity conservation on oceanic islands, yet their effectiveness for endemic species remains poorly evaluated. We assessed how various territorial protection categories conserve an

Estimating the surface area of birds: using the homing pigeon (Columba livia) as a model

open access: yesBiology Open, 2014
Estimation of the surface area of the avian body is valuable for thermoregulation and metabolism studies as well as for assessing exposure to oil and other surface-active organic pollutants from a spill.

Urban birds' detectability is affected by inter‐ and intraspecific variation in shyness

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Detection probabilities differ between bird species as a function of their life history and ecological and behavioural traits, inevitably introducing bias in their abundance and occupancy estimates. However, the effects of behavioural traits such as species shyness and vigilance on detectability remain poorly understood.

Visually Elicited Head Rotation In Pigeons (Columba livia)

open access: yesVision Research, 1996
Horizontal rotational head movements were video-taped from pigeons standing freely in a rotating cylinder. The cylinder carried vertically striped patterns approximating a sinusoidally modulated horizontal intensity distribution. We altered systematically various stimulus parameters: spatial wavelength and contrast of the pattern, angular velocity of ...

Sarcocystis calchasi Outbreak in Feral Rock Pigeons (Columba livia) in California

open access: yesVeterinary Pathology-Supplement, 2018
Twenty-two feral rock pigeons (Columba livia) from 10 counties in California with ataxia, torticollis, and difficulty standing and flying were admitted to rehabilitation centers in late winter and spring of 2017 and died or were euthanized.

Shelters or ecological traps? Context‐dependent effects of nestboxes on breeding success in a colonial raptor

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Artificial breeding structures, such as nestboxes, can potentially influence the population size and conservation status of bird species relying on heavily human‐modified environments such as agroecosystems and urban areas. However, the effectiveness of these interventions may vary, as artificial structures could attract individuals to suboptimal ...

Parasites of Columba livia (Aves: Columbiformes) in Tenerife (Canary Islands) and their role in the conservation biology of the Laurel pigeons

open access: yesParasite, 2004
The prevalence and intensity of the parasites from 50 wild doves (Columba livia) from the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the island of Tenerife (Canary Archipelago), were studied.
