Combining Population Genomics With Ancient DNA to Understand Island Colonisation History of the Madagascar Turtle Dove

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 6, March 2026.
ABSTRACT The Mascarene archipelago (Mauritius, Reunion and Rodrigues), characterised by first human arrival being recent, offers a unique setting to study species colonisation on a recent timescale, and contribution of past human interventions. Here we use a combination of modern and ancient DNA data as a case study to investigate the colonisation ...

Investigating Anthropogenic and Social Influences on Diet of Semi‐Urban Vervet Monkeys Using DNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
We used eDNA metabarcoding of faecal samples to quantify the dietary composition of two vervet monkey populations in a semi‐urban environment in South Africa over a 4‐month period, and compared these results with visual observations. We found that both methods yielded similar results, but eDNA metabarcoding revealed a greater diversity of consumed taxa.

Acute Raillietiniasis in Domestic Pigeon (Columba livia domestica)

open access: yes, 2020
| Pigeons are infected with many endo and ecto parasites. Raillietina spp. is the most prevalent parasite of pigeons. An adult male pigeon was brought to the laboratory of Parasitology, University of Malakand with clinical signs of diarrhea, emaciation ...

A general framework for modeling pathogen transmission in co‐roosting host communities

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Cross‐species transmission of pathogens can be facilitated by frequent contact among wildlife. Cross‐species transmission is often driven by phylogenetic similarity between host species, but the role this plays when multiple host species co‐roost is unknown.

Introgression of regulatory alleles and a missense coding mutation drive plumage pattern diversity in the rock pigeon

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Birds and other vertebrates display stunning variation in pigmentation patterning, yet the genes controlling this diversity remain largely unknown. Rock pigeons (Columba livia) are fundamentally one of four color pattern phenotypes, in decreasing order ...
