Catfish is an important aquaculture species in the USA. Columnaris disease is distributed worldwide, affecting a wide variety of fish species including catfish . It leads to huge economic losses each year to the US catfish industry. Channel catfish in general is highly resistant to the disease, while blue catfish is highly susceptible.

Mixed Infection in Columnaris Disease of Fish

SUMMARY In addition to Flexibacter columnaris, Corynebacterium sp was recovered from lesions associated with columnaris disease in catfish. Catfish exposed to pure cultures of the Corynebacterium sp developed circumscribed lesions, which regressed without further adverse effects.

Histopathology of experimental columnaris disease in young salmon

Abstract The histopathology of columnaris disease in young salmon is described. The gill was the major site of damage in fish experimentally infected with strains of C. columnaris of high virulence. Extensive alterations were noted in this organ and just prior to death the fish appeared to be suffering from acute respiratory distress.
