Evaluating Cryptosporidium and Giardia concentrations in combined sewer overflow [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Water and Health, 2006
Since the first identified Cryptosporidium outbreaks occurred in the 1980s and the massive 1993 Milwaukee, WI outbreak affected more than 400,000 people, the concern over the public health risks linked to protozoan pathogens Cryptosporidium and Giardia has grown.

Automated Model Construction for Combined Sewer Overflow Prediction Based on Efficient LASSO Algorithm

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems, 2019
The prediction of combined sewer overflow (CSO) operation in urban environments presents a challenging task for water utilities. The operation of CSOs (most often in heavy rainfall conditions) prevents houses and businesses from flooding.

Scaling of Short‐Duration, Summer Rainfall Event Temporal Profiles With Warming Over Great Britain

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Temperature scaling has been used to analyse the temporal profiles of short‐duration, summer rainfall events in Great Britain, for sub‐hourly observed and convection‐permitting climate model (CPM) data. Results show an increase with dewpoint temperature of event total rainfall depth, maximum intensity, concentration and front‐loading.

Data Analysis to Assess and Improve the Operation of Combined Sewer Overflow Structures with Static Optimization

open access: yesEngineering Proceedings
Combined sewer systems contain flow-dividing structures. These provide retention volumes for hydraulic overloads of the sewer system during storm weather events.

Transport and Behavior of Microplastics Emissions From Urban Sources in the Baltic Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2020
Urban sources, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), untreated wastewater (not connected to WWTPs), and especially combined sewer overflow systems (CSS) including stormwater are major pathways for microplastics in the aquatic environment.

The effect of combined sewer overflow (CSO) on the abundance of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the James River [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Antibiotics have been used to treat bacterial infections worldwide since their discovery in the early 20th century and are vital to human health. Unfortunately, the heavy use of antibiotics has led to the increased natural selection of antibiotic ...
