Segregation and Combining Ability

1979
We have seen in Chapter 1 that with a knowledge of the mendelian principle of units of inheritance and a chequerboard diagram it is possible to work out expected segregations. The technique can be used by the breeder to forecast the numbers of individuals of different types in a family from a deliberate cross and also, in the reverse way, by observing ...

COMBINING ABILITY STUDIES IN GROUNDNUT

Madras Agricultural Journal, 1996
Five rust resistant and four rust susceptible groundnut (Arachis hypogaca L.) genotypes were crossed in all possible combinations to study the nature of combining ability and gene action involved for 13 quantitative traits. Combining ability analysis showed the importance of GCA variance alone for number of primary branches and days to 50 per cent ...

Heterosis and combining ability in Phaseolus aureus roxb

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1974
Heterosis and combining ability were estimated in F 1, F 2, F 3 and backcross generations of diallel cross in Phaseolus aureus. Hybrid vigour for yield compared with the mid-parent and better parent was noted in 21 and 20 F 1 hybrids, respectively. There was an appreciable amount of inbreeding depression in the F 2 and F 3 compared with the F 1 hybrids.

Combining ability and heterosis in diallel crosses of maize

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1977
The present investigation involved crosses among 20 elite yellow maize populations. These were evaluated in four environments in a randomized block design with four replications in each environment. Variety Cuba was observed to be the best general combiner for grain yield, followed by St Croix and Prolific.

COMBINING ABILITY IN BARLEY BREEDING

Madras Agricultural Journal, 1983
Combining ability was studied for grain yield and its component using the F1, F and F, of a 6 x 6 diallel set in barley. Both GCA and SCA variances were significant for all the traits in each generation. The GCA effects were associated with per se performance of parents for almost all the traits, ayoti, DL 70 and PL 102 were found to be good general ...

COMBINING ABILITY IN WINTER SORGHUM

Madras Agricultural Journal, 1996
The nature of gene action through combining ability analysis for grain yield and its components was studied in 5 X 5 diallel cross of sorghum. Estimates of gea and sca indicated the influence of both additive and non additive gene action for the inheritance of grain yield, stem girth and plant height.

Combining Ability of Maize Inbreds for Carotenoids and Tocopherols

Crop Science, 2003
Carotenoids (provitamin A) and tocopherols (vitamin E) are lipid soluble antioxidants associated with decreased risk of several degenerative diseases. Both vitamins occur naturally in corn (Zea mays L.) grain. Corn grain is a major component in diets of humans and animals, and may have added value with increased levels of carotenoids and tocopherols ...

Combining ability estimates in groundnut

Madras Agricultural Journal, 2000
Accurate identification of promising parents is crucial for groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivar development. Six cultivars, namely, ICGS 44, Ginar 1, ALR 2, JL 24, GG 2 and CO 2 were intermated in all possible combinations in a full diallel mating design. The 30 reciprocal F, hybrids and six parents were utilized for the study. Five traits, namely,

COMBINING ABILITY STUDIES IN DURUM WHEAT

Madras Agricultural Journal, 1986
Combining ability study was carried out for grain vied, its component tralis, harvest index and grain protein content in a diallel sct of six diverse varieties of. durum wheat (Triticum durum Desi.) in F, and F, generations General and specif combining ability were highly significant for all the seven traits in both the gene- 10t-ons.
