Origin and Evolution of Long-period Comets

Astronomical Journal, 2019
We develop an evolutionary model of the long-period comet (LPC) population, starting from their birthplace in a massive trans-Neptunian disk that was dispersed by migrating giant planets.

On So In Comets

Earth, Moon, and Planets, 1999
The solution of the statistical equilibrium equations for the SO molecule is used to estimate the expected intensities of microwave lines. The observed fluxes of the microwave lines of SO in Comet Hale–Bopp require approximately 1.8 1028 mol/sec which give fluxes in the A3Π - X3Σ−bands below the observable limit, consistent with the observations.

Comet in context

Proceedings of the Paris C. Kanellakis memorial workshop on Principles of computing & knowledge: Paris C. Kanellakis memorial workshop on the occasion of his 50th birthday, 2003
Combinatorial optimization problems naturally arise in many application areas, including logistics, manufacturing, supply-chain management, and resource allocation. They often give rise to complex and intricate programs, because of their inherent computational and software complexity.

The Spin of Comets

Scientific American, 1980
Puzzling changes in the orbital period of Comet Encke, which circles the sun every 3.3 years, can be attributed to the rotation of its icy nucleus and the thrust of gases evaporated from it.

Rendezvous with a Comet

Scientific American, 2014
A diagram is presented showing how the Rosetta spacecraft of the European Space Agency will carry out its mission of orbiting Comet 76P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko then sending a lander to the comet's surface from August 2014 through December 2015.

Comets and Their Composition

Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1987
Recent theoretical and observational studies of comets are reviewed, with an emphasis on in situ data from spacecraft encounters with P/Giacobini-Zinner (September 1985) and P/Halley (March 1986). Topics addressed include clues on the origin and permanence of the Oort cometary cloud, observations of cometary nuclei far from the sun, the Halley nucleus,

Comets and life

Advances in Space Research, 1987
Some of the chemical species which have been detected in comets include H2O, HCN, CH3CN, CO, CO2, NH3, CS, C2 and C3. All of these have also been detected in the interstellar medium, indicating a probable relationship between interstellar dust and gas clouds and comets.
