Does “Paper Oil” Matter? Energy Markets’ Financialization and Co-Movements with Equity Markets

open access: yesCommodities
We revisit, and document new facts regarding, the financialization of U.S. energy markets in 2000–2010. We show that, after controlling for macroeconomic factors and physical energy market fundamentals, the strength of energy markets’ co-movements with ...

Self‐Seeded Nucleation of PET in a Benign Solvent Yields a High Modulus Aerogel With Ultra‐Low Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A new benign solvent (1,3‐diphenylacetone) enables a simple, safe, and sustainable dissolution and gelation method to convert waste PET into low density, monolithic aerogels with high mechanical strength (E = 20 MPa) and remarkably low thermal conductivity (k = 21.9 to 28.9 mW/m·K).

Time-Varying Deterministic Volatility Model for Options on Wheat Futures

open access: yesCommodities
This study introduces a robust model that captures wheat futures’ volatility dynamics, influenced by seasonality, time to maturity, and storage dynamics, with minimal calibratable parameters. Our approach reduces error-proneness and enhances plausibility

Fundamental Challenges, Physical Implementations, and Integration Strategies for Ising Machines in Large‐Scale Optimization Tasks

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Ising machines are emerging as specialized hardware solvers for computationally hard optimization problems. This review examines five major platforms—digital CMOS, analog CMOS, emerging devices, coherent optics, and quantum systems—highlighting physics‐rooted advantages and shared bottlenecks in scalability and connectivity.

The Efficiency of China’s Carbon Trading Schemes: A Tale of Seven Pilot Markets

open access: yesCommodities
This study evaluates the efficiency of China’s seven emission trading schemes (ETS) piloted in 2013. We evaluate seven pilots’ overall technical and scale efficiencies and temporal dynamics during 2014–2023. We use a bootstrap correction data envelopment

Kenyan Farmers' Policy Priorities During Economic Crisis and Stability: Insights From a Best‐Worst Scaling Experiment

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Amid rising food and fertilizer prices, understanding farmers' policy preferences is critical for effective crisis response. We use best‐worst scaling experiment to assess Kenyan mobile‐owning crop farmers' preferences for government support under high and normal price scenarios.

Sustainable Productivity Growth in Agriculture: The Role of Shifts in R&D Investments and Technology

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The objective of the paper is to evaluate the long‐term prospects of sustainable productivity growth linked to plausible assumptions on public agricultural R&D investments as the key productivity driver. Second, it investigates the role of changing R&D focus from yield maximization to input saving technologies (fertilizers and pesticides). The

An example of strategic market game with infinitely many commodities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This short paper shows in an example of strategic market game that the CournotNash equilibrium converges to the Walras equilibrium, even in the case of an exchange economy with infinitely many ...

Do Tax Incentives for Farmland Leases Increase Farm Supply? Evidence From Iowa's Beginning Farmer Tax Credit

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In recent decades, agriculture has become increasingly concentrated through horizontal mergers and acquisitions via corporate entities, and policy makers are concerned this will be exacerbated by the aging population of farm operators. To reduce market concentration in agriculture, many states have enacted policies to entice new prospective ...
