Thoracic bifurcation of the common carotid artery

Neuroradiology, 1973
This study was based on angiographic records. We found that the bifurcation of the common carotid artery can be located amazingly low on the neck or even within the upper mediastinum. We have described five such instances; two bifurcations at the T3 level and three at T1-2 level.

Common Carotid Artery

All the great arteries of the head and neck are derived from the six pharyngeal arches (PAA), which are composed of endothelial cells derived from the mesoderm and develop jointly with the six pharyngeal arches. The third PAA is responsible for the formation of the carotid artery system (Frisdal and Trainor 2014).

Surgical Treatment of Common Carotid Artery Occlusion

Neurosurgery, 1983
Abstract Complete occlusion of the common carotid artery (CCA) has been found in 4 to 5% of patients suffering from cerebral ischemia due to atherosclerotic lesions. Congenital Absence of the Common Carotid Artery With Common Origin of the Internal and External Carotid Arteries

Journal for Vascular Ultrasound, 2018
Congenital absence of the common carotid artery is a rare vascular anomaly that is usually discovered incidentally in otherwise asymptomatic patients and can potentially pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
