Lethal grip for an endangered endemic frog: The freshwater crab Potamon karpathos (Decapoda, Potamidae) preys on Karpathos water frog Pelophylax cerigensis (Anura, Ranidae) [PDF]
Invertebrate predation on amphibians is widespread, although unreported in Europe. Here, we present documented predation of the Karpathos water frog (Pelophylax cerigensis) by the crab Potamon karpathos.

Anthropogenic and ecological drivers of amphibian disease (ranavirosis).
Ranaviruses are causing mass amphibian die-offs in North America, Europe and Asia, and have been implicated in the decline of common frog (Rana temporaria) populations in the UK.

Rapid adaptation to invasive predators overwhelms natural gradients of intraspecific variation
Invasive species can influence the evolution of natives. Here, authors use common garden experiments to show that invasive predatory crayfish have homogenized the developmental timing of a native frog by selecting for more rapid development to avoid ...

Anti-apoptotic response during anoxia and recovery in a freeze-tolerant wood frog (Rana sylvatica) [PDF]
The common wood frog, Rana sylvatica, utilizes freeze tolerance as a means of winter survival. Concealed beneath a layer of leaf litter and blanketed by snow, these frogs withstand subzero temperatures by allowing approximately 65–70% of total body water

KHS‐Cnd peptide is able to impair biofilm formation and disaggregate mature biofilms in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. Differences in extracellular metabolites reflect changes in biofilm metabolism due to KHS‐Cnd treatment. Among the differentially represented extracellular metabolites upon KHS‐Cnd treatment, the significantly altered ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

An Albino Specimen of the Common Frog [PDF]
ON February 22, Mr. L. Gentry, of Blacksmith Hill, Sanderstead, Surrey, found an albino specimen of the common frog (Rana temporaria) in his garden. He presented the frog to this Museum, and it is now living in the Aquarium.

A multivalent antiviral platform based on honeycomb‐shaped DNA nanostructures (HC–Urumin) is developed to enhance the potency and breadth of the host defense peptide Urumin. Through spatially patterned trimeric presentation, HC–Urumin disrupts influenza A virus entry, improves cell viability, and reduces disease severity in vivo‐offering a modular and ...

The lateral stripe – a reliable way for software assisted individual identification for Hyla arborea
Traditional mark-recapture methods for amphibians and reptiles involve the application of invasive physical markers, such as toe clipping. Photographic identification methods are non-invasive alternative that use natural colouration of individuals for ...

Evolution of pharmacologic specificity in the pregnane X receptor
Background The pregnane X receptor (PXR) shows the highest degree of cross-species sequence diversity of any of the vertebrate nuclear hormone receptors. In this study, we determined the pharmacophores for activation of human, mouse, rat, rabbit, chicken,
