Biometrics and colour forms of chicks of common terns and arctic terns
Ringing & Migration, 1984Methods of distinguishing the chicks of Common and Arctic Terns based on measurement of tarsus length and on the colours of the dorsal down and the belly down are described. The variation of tarsus length with age was investigated by relating it to bill length, to midâtoe length, and to body weight.

Evidence for social facilitation of preening in the common tern
Animal Behaviour, 1998Social facilitation of reproductive behaviour has been studied extensively in gulls and terns, but social facilitation of preening has been reported only anecdotally, and has not been previously quantified. We studied a common tern, Sterna hirundo, colony during the summers of 1996 and 1997 to test for socially facilitated preening.
