Undoing commons. Diritto Alla Città, Attivismo Culturale e Pratiche di (Un-)Commoning nel Sud d'Italia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The Cantieri Culturali in the neighbourhood of Zisa (Palermo) represent one of those places where movements of urban commoning and practices of cultural activism have produced common claims through the conversion of a place destined to privatization into

Common and modality-specific processes in the mental lexicon [PDF]

open access: yesMemory & Cognition, 1983
Eight experiments were conducted to resolve: (1) empirical inconsistencies in repetition effects under intermodality conditions in word identification and lexical decision, and (2) an associated theoretical conflict concerning lexical organization.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Countering Remotisation through Community-led Place-making: A Scottish case study

open access: yesMiranda: Revue Pluridisciplinaire du Monde Anglophone
Taking the small coastal village of Collieston in Aberdeenshire as a case study, this paper explores how practices of “community-led place-making” and “commoning” – from social activities to community ownership projects – can enrich local democracy and ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Lifecourse commoning: Retirement and de-alienation in urban gardens

open access: yes
Despite being a unique aspect of ageing in capitalist societies, retirement has been neglected within critical research. As a disruption in people’s relation to the capitalist political economy, retirement can be framed through a productivist lens of ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...
