Technology transfer standards for communication aids for disabled people
Performance standards for the transfer of technology for communication aids for disabled people are discussed. A prerequisite and integral part of the design process for products used by disabled persons must be consumer feedback. A disabled person who uses the technology and is articulate in assessing, describing, and documenting the impact of ...

Some considerations in the design of communication aids for the severely physically disabled
This paper summarises some of the design principles adopted during the development of a microcomputer communication aid by the authors (Holte, 1978). In such an aid, a graphic representation of selection algorithms gives rise to an objective measure of the efficiency of a communication aid.

Abstract Possible ways of meeting the user's needs when designing communication aids with synthetic voice output are discussed. The points raised evolved from a case study of the development of microcomputer based systems which the blind people can use to read page-oriented text.

Telecad—a television communication aid for the disabled
Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, 1979A communication aid is described that enables up to four severely physically disabled people to write via a television screen. The equipment is designed for use in a classroom situation and allows a conversation to take place between these people under the control of the users themselves. The equipment can be operated by single, double or triple switch

Perceptions of Writing and Communication Aid Use Among Children with a Physical Disability
Assistive Technology, 2010Children with physical disabilities (CPD) often experience decreased opportunities to participate in daily occupations. Occupational therapists (OTs) prescribe writing and communication aids; however, little is known about this population's perceptions of the technology.

Communication aid for speech disabled people using Morse codification
Proceedings of the Second Joint 24th Annual Conference and the Annual Fall Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society] [Engineering in Medicine and Biology, 2002A synthetic voice aid for speech disabled people is presented in this work. The system is based on the Morse code, given through four keys. A PIC was used to detect and decode Morse code as well as to make the translation to ASCII code. The data processing was performed by an MC68HC11 microcontroller.
