Telecad—a television communication aid for the disabled
Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, 1979A communication aid is described that enables up to four severely physically disabled people to write via a television screen. The equipment is designed for use in a classroom situation and allows a conversation to take place between these people under the control of the users themselves. The equipment can be operated by single, double or triple switch

Communication aid for speech disabled people using Morse codification
Proceedings of the Second Joint 24th Annual Conference and the Annual Fall Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society] [Engineering in Medicine and Biology, 2002A synthetic voice aid for speech disabled people is presented in this work. The system is based on the Morse code, given through four keys. A PIC was used to detect and decode Morse code as well as to make the translation to ASCII code. The data processing was performed by an MC68HC11 microcontroller.

Some interface issues in developing intelligent communication aids for people with disabilities
Proceedings of the 2nd international conference on Intelligent user interfaces - IUI '97, 1997Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is the field of study concerned with providing devices and techniques to augment the communicative ability of a person whose disability makes it difficult to speak in an understandable fashion. For several years, we have been applying natural language processing techniques to the field of AAC in order to

Augmentative and Alternative Communication, 2013
When speech is not functional to meet some or all of an individual's communication needs, aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems are often implemented. Although aided AAC systems offer some advantages over speech, they also impose some unique demands, especially on working memory, which is commonly defined as the cognitive ...

Development of Communication Aid Device for Disabled Persons Using Corneal Surface Reflection Image
Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Graphics and Signal Processing, 2018Improving quality of life (QOL) has become an important issue for patients with neurological diseases such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and SMA (spinal atrophy). At the same time, it is indispensable to secure a communication device that displays its own intention, and various interfaces have been proposed.

EyeAssist: A communication aid through gaze tracking for patients with neuro-motor disabilities
2017 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PerCom Workshops), 2017The paper presents EyeAssist, a low cost, user friendly communication aid developed specifically for individuals suffering from neuro-motor problems. Existing gaze based typing systems encounter problems of unintentional key presses, extensive calibration process and inbuilt noise of eye trackers.

An implementation of an eye-blink-based communication aid for people with severe disabilities
2008 International Conference on Audio, Language and Image Processing, 2008This paper presents an implementation of a low-cost vision-based computer interface which allows people with severe disabilities to use eye blinks to access computers and communicate with other persons. Our communication aid requires only one low-cost Web camera and a personal computer.
