Though the mutasarrifiyah of Mount Lebanon was the envy of the neighbouring Turkish provinces from 1860-1914, the situation changed rapidly and adversely after the start of World War I. The saniaq of Lebanon lost its autonomous status (and with it its privileged position) in October, 1915.
