Population Dynamics and Community Composition of Ammonia Oxidizers in Salt Marshes after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico had significant effects on microbial communities in the Gulf, but impacts on nitrifying communities in adjacent salt marshes have not been investigated.

Bridging the gap: Multi‐stakeholder perspectives of molecular diagnostics in oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Although molecular diagnostics is transforming cancer care, implementing novel technologies remains challenging. This study identifies unmet needs and technology requirements through a two‐step stakeholder involvement. Liquid biopsies for monitoring applications and predictive biomarker testing emerge as key unmet needs. Technology requirements vary by

Temporal stability responses to nitrogen addition in Tibetan alpine grasslands: A community composition perspective

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture
Plant community composition typically undergoes progressive changes along environmental gradients. However, most experimental studies have focused on individual communities, so it remains unclear how exogenous nutrient inputs affect the stability of ...

Characterizing free-living and particle-attached bacterial communities of a canyon river reservoir on the Yungui Plateau, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Revealing the composition of free-living (FL) and particle-attached (PA) bacterial communities could provide insights into their distinct roles in biogeochemical processes and algal bloom dynamics.

Sun exposure drives Antarctic cryptoendolithic community structure and composition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The harsh environmental conditions of the ice-free regions of Continental Antarctica are considered one of the closest Martian analogues on Earth. There, rocks play a pivotal role as substratum for life and endolithism represents a primary habitat for ...

Plant Community Richness and Composition in Formerly Dammed Reservoirs of Central Massachusetts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Small dam removals have become common in the United States as many have begun to lose their function and efficiency, often with the goal of improving safety and/or restoring riverine ecosystems.

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

A comparison of eDNA sampling methods in an estuarine environment on presence of longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys) and fish community composition

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA
The loss of tidal wetlands in the San Francisco Bay estuary have led to declines in native fish presence. Restoration of tidal wetlands in this area has intensified, with a primary goal of increasing the number of native fishes.

Effect of land use on soil nematode community composition and co-occurrence network relationship

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture
Land use influences soil biota community composition and diversity, and then belowground ecosystem processes and functions. To characterize the effect of land use on soil biota, soil nematode communities in crop land, forest land and fallow land were ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.
