Rural Labor Supply and Economic Opportunities: Commuting, Migration, Tariffs, and Immigration

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Some rural counties remain dependent on agricultural or manufacturing jobs, but an increasing proportion have diversified economics. Rural counties also differ in their abilities to commute to an urban market characterized by higher wages and labor productivity.

Commute Time for a Gaussian Wave Packet on a Graph [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper presents a novel approach to quantifying the information flow on a graph. The proposed approach is based on the solution of a wave equation, which is defined using the edge-based Laplacian of the graph. The initial condition of the wave equation is a Gaussian wave packet on a single edge of the graph.

Commute-Time Convolution Kernels for Graph Clustering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Commute time has proved to be a powerful attribute for clustering and characterising graph structure, and which is easily computed from the Laplacian spectrum. Moreover, commute time is robust to deletions of random edges and noisy edge weights. In this paper, we explore the idea of using convolution kernel to compare the distributions of commute time ...

Local Construction Employment and Binge Drinking Among US Adults in Their Early 30s: Insights From a Path Analysis

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Construction workers face elevated risks of alcohol misuse—especially binge drinking—due to physically demanding labor, long hours, and limited paid vacation. At the same time, emerging evidence suggests that a larger local construction sector may have protective community‐level effects on alcohol and other drug outcomes.
