Based on the “linear‐group” design strategy, a high performance ultraviolet birefringent material RbHg5Br11 with aligned linear [HgBr2] units, demonstrating a large birefringence (Δn ≈ 0.35@546 nm); a wide optical bandgap (≈3.73 eV); as well as a good crystal growth habit; is rationally designed; and fabricated by a simple solution method.

X-Ray Polarimetry as a Tool to Constrain Orbital Parameters in X-Ray Binaries
X-ray binary systems consist of a companion star and a compact object in close orbit. Thanks to their copious X-ray emission, these objects have been studied in detail using X-ray spectroscopy and timing.

Prospects for GRB Polarimetry with GRAPE [PDF]
This paper discusses the latest progress in the development of GRAPE (Gamma‐Ray Polarimeter Experiment), a hard X‐ray Compton Polarimeter. The purpose of GRAPE is to measure the polarization of hard X‐rays in the 50–300 keV energy range.

Evaluating simulated compact polarimetry for Emergency Geomatics Service flood mapping
When severe flooding occurs in Canada, the Emergency Geomatics Service (EGS) is tasked with creating and disseminating maps that depict the flood extent in near real time. These maps delineate open water and flooded vegetation and are created using a combination of raster image processing, machine learning classification, and threshold-based region ...

On the Nature of the Binary Components of RX J0806.3+1527 [PDF]
We present imaging circular polarimetry and near-infrared photometry of the suspected ultra-short period white-dwarf binary RX J0806.3+1527 obtained with the ESO VLT and discuss the implications for a possible magnetic nature of the white dwarf accretor ...

The effects of disk and dust structure on observed polarimetric images of protoplanetary disks
Imaging polarimetry is a powerful tool for imaging faint circumstellar material. For a correct analysis of observations we need to fully understand the effects of dust particle parameters, as well as the effects of the telescope, atmospheric seeing, and ...

Complex Structured Light Generation Using Printed Liquid Crystal Droplets
Inkjet‐printed liquid crystal droplets generate structured light beams with spatially varying polarization and phase. These include full Poincaré beam, vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum, and beam with polarization singularities, offering a simple approach for compact structured light generation in optical manipulation, imaging, and ...
