On the Mechanism of Casting Skin Formation in Compacted Graphite Cast Iron

International Journal of Metalcasting, 2009
The mechanical properties of ductile iron (DI) and compacted graphite iron (CGI) iron are measured and reported on standard machined specimens (as per ASTM). However, most castings retain most of the as-cast surface. This surface layer (the casting skin) includes both surface and subsurface features.

Thermophysical Properties of Thin Walled Compacted Graphite Iron Castings

2015
The thermal conductivity, diffusivity and specific heat were investigated in thin walled compacted graphite iron castings. The research was conducted for thin-walled iron castings with a 3-mm wall thickness. This study addresses the effect of cooling rate and of titanium additions on the exhibited microstructure and thermophysical parameters of thin ...

Compacted Graphite Irons - High Quality Engineering Materials in the Cast Iron Family

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1984
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The range of properties of compacted graphite cast irons lie generally intermediate between those of flake graphite and nodular graphite cast irons and makes them attractive for a number of applications. These properties arise from the unique compacted graphite structure. The alternative ways of producing compacted

Occurrence and effect of casting skin in compacted graphite iron

International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2016
Most iron castings retain their as cast surfaces because of their geometric complexity and to minimise the machining costs. However, the mechanical properties that are documented in standards (i.e. ASTM) are tested on fully machined test bars. Therefore, the effect of the as cast surface and subsurface features (commonly referred as ‘casting skin’) on ...

Growth of Ferrite Needles in Compacted Graphite Cast Iron

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
The austempering kinetics transformation of compacted graphite cast irons austempered at 623K is studied. The length (l) and the number per unit volume (N) of ferrite needles were followed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), while Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS) was used to determine the austenite relative areas.
