Cast Iron: Compacted Graphite

2016
In this entry, a review of research papers is presented that highlights the formation of a microstructure and the properties of compacted graphite cast iron (CGI) castings. The entry presents the morphology of compacted graphite compared to flake graphite and spheroidal (nodular) graphite.

Controlling melt quality of compacted graphite iron

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2007
A melt quality evaluation system, based on the pattern recognition of the thermal analysis cooling curves and database technique, has been developed to evaluate the modification level and predict the graphite morphology in compacted graphite iron (CGI).

Wear Mechanism when Machining Compacted Graphite Iron

CIRP Annals, 2002
Abstract The industrial application of compacted graphite iron in the automotive industry is taking a rather long time due to its uneconomic machinability, because of a significant decrease in tool life. After six years of holistic research of the PTW in cooperation with foundries, manufactures and material scientists, the wear mechanism was ...

Laser-assisted machining of compacted graphite iron

International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 2006
Compacted graphite iron (CGI) is a material currently under study for the new generation of engines, including blocks, cylinder liners, and cylinder heads. Its unique graphite structure yields desirable high strength, but makes it difficult to machine, thus resulting in a machining cost.

Machinability of compacted graphite iron (CGI) and flake graphite iron (FGI) with coated carbide

International Journal of Machining and Machinability of Materials, 2013
Compacted graphite iron (CGI) has an important role in manufacturing of new generation engines. Better strength of CGI, as compared to flake graphite iron (FGI), allows CGI engine to perform at higher peak pressure, higher fuel efficiency and lower emission rate. However, the machinability of CGI is as poor as compared to FGI.

High strength high toughness compacted graphite cast iron

Materials Science and Technology, 1995
AbstractIn the present paper, heat treatments were used to obtain upper and lower bainitic compacted graphite cast irons. The effects of the percentage of compacted graphite, the matrix structure, and the specimen thickness on the mechanical properties, fracture toughness, and fatigue crack growth rate of the irons were evaluated.

Catalytic Effect of Carbonates in Iron–Graphite Compacts

Powder Metallurgy, 1988
Abstract Additions of certain alkali metal carbonates to irongraphite compacts cause the generation of a carburising gas atmosphere within the pores during sintering, and carbon alloying takes place efficiently and homogeneously at temperatures as low as 850°C if sintering is conducted in an inert gas furnace atmosphere.

Machinability of Compacted Graphite Iron in Honing

ASME 2008 International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference, Volume 1, 2008
Compacted graphite iron (CGI) has been viewed as the next generation casting material for diesel engines to further the automotive energy efficiency because of its better mechanical strength for lighter engine designs as compared to gray cast iron. The machinability of CGI is analyzed and tested in honing, a standard engine manufacturing process for ...
