Machinability of compacted graphite iron (CGI) and flake graphite iron (FGI) with coated carbide
International Journal of Machining and Machinability of Materials, 2013Compacted graphite iron (CGI) has an important role in manufacturing of new generation engines. Better strength of CGI, as compared to flake graphite iron (FGI), allows CGI engine to perform at higher peak pressure, higher fuel efficiency and lower emission rate. However, the machinability of CGI is as poor as compared to FGI.

Comparison of austempering transformation in spheroidal graphite and compacted graphite cast irons
International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2006AbstractMicrostructure observations and measurements of retained austenite content are reported as a function of austempering time at temperatures of 440, 370, and 300°C after austenitising at 900°C. The results of the experimental investigation indicate that at early stages of austempering (less than ∼8 min), compacted graphite irons usually show ...

Stress relaxation of compacted graphite iron alloyed with molybdenum
International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2013In a previous study, the thermomechanical fatigue resistance of four compacted graphite irons (CGIs) and one grey cast iron was investigated. The molybdenum content of the four CGIs varied between 0 and 1·01 wt-%. It was observed that during thermal cycling, the maximum value of the compressive stress continuously decreased while the value of the ...

Wear Mechanism when Machining Compacted Graphite Iron
CIRP Annals, 2002Abstract The industrial application of compacted graphite iron in the automotive industry is taking a rather long time due to its uneconomic machinability, because of a significant decrease in tool life. After six years of holistic research of the PTW in cooperation with foundries, manufactures and material scientists, the wear mechanism was ...

Growth of Ferrite Needles in Compacted Graphite Cast Iron
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005The austempering kinetics transformation of compacted graphite cast irons austempered at 623K is studied. The length (l) and the number per unit volume (N) of ferrite needles were followed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), while Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS) was used to determine the austenite relative areas.

Thermomechanical behaviour of compacted graphite iron
It is estimated that about 70% of the total globally produced castings are made of various types of cast irons. Its extensive use is thanks to its excellent casting qualities, good mechanical and thermal properties, as well as its competitive price.Although cast irons have been used in a number of industrial applications for many decades and they are ...openaire +1 more source
Elastic aftereffect of iron-graphite compacts in cold pressing
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics, 19701. The results are presented of an investigation of the elastic aftereffect exhibited during pressing by iron-graphite materials containing from 3 to 30 wt.% of graphite. 2. An equation has been derived expressing the elastic aftereffect in terms of compaction pressure and amount of the second component.

Metallographic structure of bainitic compacted graphite cast irons
Materials Characterization, 1991Abstract The microstructural characteristics of austempered unalloyed compacted graphite cast irons have been studied. The material was subjected to a variety of bainitic treatments based on four different combinations of austenitizing and austempering temperatures, plus various periods of time at the temper temperature.
