A Multidimensional Companding Scheme for Source Coding with a Perceptually Relevant Distortion Measure

open access: yes, 2009
In this thesis, we develop a multidimensional companding scheme for the preceptual distortion measure by S. van de Par [1]. The scheme is asymptotically optimal in the sense that it has a vanishing rate-loss with increasing vector dimension.

Temporal Noise Shaping on MDCT Subband Signals for Transform Audio Coding

open access: yes
196200A common problem when coding transient signals in transform audio codecs is the temporal unmasking of quantization noise leading to artifacts such as pre-echoes.

A study of several data compression techniques for space telemetry channels

open access: yes, 1968
This thesis is a report of an effort to investigate new methods of data reduction. The methods chosen for detailed study were use of the Fast Fourier Transform, limiting, and companding.
