The Principal Step in Comparative Grammar
Language, 1950[Reconstruction by the comparative method (as distinct from internal reconstruction based on alternations between phonemes in a paradigm) is essentially a problem in phonemics, in which the place of allophones is taken by sets of sound correspondences that are partially alike (share one component) and in complementary distribution.

Mandarin transitive comparatives and the grammar of measurement
Journal of East Asian Linguistics, 2012Mandarin Chinese has two strategies for forming comparatives of superiority: one in which the standard of comparison is introduced by the morpheme bi, and one that resembles a transitive verb construction, in which the standard of comparison directly follows a gradable adjective.

Evolving Compare-Exchange Networks Using Grammars
Artificial Life, 1995We apply a genetic algorithm whose genotypes represent simple grammars to search for families of compare-exchange networks that are merging networks. The grammars are restricted to be of a simple form based on prior knowledge about the search domain. Finding merging networks in this fashion leads to the discovery of networks that also sort if the data

Vietnamese subcomparatives, the grammar of degrees, and comparative deletion
2020Beck et al. (2009) conducted a cross-linguistic survey of degree constructions and proposed three parameters to classify languages according to the constructions they allow and their available interpretations: 1. whether a language has degrees in its semantics; 2. whether a language has degree abstraction; and 3.

2000
Comparative linguistics and grammaticalization theory both belong to the broader category of historical linguistics, yet few linguists practice both. The methods and goals of each group seem largely distinct: comparative linguists have by and large avoided reconstructing grammar, while grammaticalization theoreticians have either focused on explaining ...

Computational Construction Grammar: Comparing ECG and FCG
2012This chapter compares two computational frameworks developed over the last decade to support investigations into the emergence and use of language, Fluid Construction Grammar (FCG) and Embodied Construction Grammar (ECG). Both of these representational formalisms are rooted in the construction grammar tradition, sharing basic assumptions about the ...
