Principles of biological comparison.

Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica, 1989
The problems of comparative analyses in biology have been discussed, showing that a single comparative method does not exist. Several principles of comparison are elucidated, which include that comparisons do not have to possess a phylogenetic basis, can be horizontal or vertical, and can be genetic or nongenetic.

Maximum and Comparison Principles

1977
The purpose of this chapter is to provide various maximum and comparison principles for quasilinear equations which extend corresponding results in Chapter 3. We consider second order, quasilinear operators Q of the form (10.1) Qu = aij(x, u, Du)Diju + b(x, u, Du), aij = aji, where x = (x1..., xn) is contained in a domain Ω of ℝn, n ≥ 2, and, unless ...

A comparison principle for minimizers

Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences - Series I - Mathematics, 2000
The authors present conditions for the validity of a comparison principle, which do not require the validity of the Euler-Lagrange equation. They derive a weak maximum principle even for some degenerate elliptic equation and prove Lipschitz continuity of minimizers under a variant of the bounded slope condition.

Elastography: history, principles, and technique comparison

Abdominal Imaging, 2015
Elastography is a relatively new imaging technology that creates images of tissue stiffness. It can be thought of an extension of the ancient technique of palpation but it gives better spatial localization information and is less subjective. Two main types of elastography are currently in use, strain elastography where the tissue displacement in ...

Comparison between BAW and SAW sensor principles

Proceedings of International Frequency Control Symposium, 1998
A comparison is given between piezoelectrically excited bulk acoustic wave (BAW) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) elements with respect to their primary sensitivity functions and principal capabilities for sensor applications. The importance of mode purity for high dynamic range sensors is emphasized. Characteristic sensor examples are reviewed, and the

Comparison principles for Gaussian processes

2000
Here we demonstrate how the study of Gaussian stochastic processes is possible by comparing their covariance functions. For this purpose, we need some preordering relations in the class Φ+(T) of real-valued positive functions given on a set T of parameters. As a rule, T will be a separable metric space.
