Optimal Compartment Layout Design for a Naval Ship Using an Improved Genetic Algorithm

open access: closedMarine Technology and SNAME News, 2002
With the trend in modern naval ships towards less dense payloads, space layout design has become more important. Recent advances in computing science and increased understanding of methods for developing mathematical models, which form the basis of the space layout design, have helped with the development of a powerful design procedure.

Wave generation of a compartmented surface-effect ship

Journal of Marine Science and Technology, 2010
A series of carefully controlled experiments on the wave-generation characteristics of a model of a compartmented surface-effect ship has been conducted in a towing tank. Configurations of the model included cases encompassing one subcushion and two subcushions, as well as differing values of the pressures in the subcushions.

Representation of compartmented spaces for computer-aided ship design

Computer-Aided Design, 1984
The representation within a computer of such complex entities as ships is described. The representation is so constructed that it may be built up and changed as the design of the entity progresses. An entity may consist of any hollow polyhedron which is divided in two practical ways into compartments or spaces.

Long wavelength video detection of fire in ship compartments

Fire Safety Journal, 2006
Abstract This paper describes progress using filtered, long wavelength video image-based detection (LWVD) of events in laboratory tests and full scale fire testing within the Volume Sensor Program at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). This effort toward developing a real-time, remote sensing detection system utilizes video image detection (VID)
