Ground Motion Simulations for the 19 January 2020 Jiashi, China, Earthquake Using Stochastic Finite‐Fault Approach

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 9, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract A 6.0‐magnitude (Mw) earthquake was reported to have occurred in Jiashi County, Xinjiang at 21:27 on 19 January 2020, Beijing time (13:27 UTC). This study applied a stochastic finite‐fault approach based on the dynamic corner frequency (EXSIM) to simulate 23 near‐field stations within a distance of 120 km from the epicenter.

A Proper Use of the Adjacent Land‐Based Observatory Magnetic Field Data to Account for the Geomagnetic Disturbances During Offshore Directional Drilling

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 20, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Directional drilling in the oil fields relies particularly on the “on‐fly” measurements of the natural magnetic field (measurements while drilling; MWD); the MWD are eventually used to construct the well path. These measurements are the superposition of the signals from the internal, core and crustal, and external, ionospheric and ...

Diverse Deformation Mechanisms and Lithologic Controls in an Active Orogenic Wedge: Structural Geology and Thermochronometry of the Eastern Greater Caucasus

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 41, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Orogenic wedges are common at convergent plate margins and deform internally to maintain a self‐similar geometry during growth. New structural mapping and thermochronometry data illustrate that the eastern Greater Caucasus mountain range of western Asia undergoes deformation via distinct mechanisms that correspond with contrasting lithologies ...

A Deeper Look Into the 2021 Tyrnavos Earthquake Sequence (TES) Reveals Coseismic Breaching of an Unrecognized Large‐Scale Fault Relay Zone in Continental Greece

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 41, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Large magnitude (Mw ∼ ≥6) earthquakes in extensional settings are often associated with simultaneous rupture of multiple normal faults as a result of static and/or dynamic stress transfer. Here, we report details of the coseismic breaching of a previously unrecognized large‐scale fault relay zone in central Greece, through three successive ...

Dendrochronological analysis of bowed and plucked instruments from the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory, Naples

open access: yesArchaeometry, Volume 65, Issue 1, Page 151-164, February 2023., 2023
Abstract The Museo Storico Musicale of the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory of Music in Naples owns a collection of over 200 musical instruments of considerable historical importance. Within the collection, 30 bowed and plucked instruments representative of the Neapolitan violin‐making tradition were analysed dendrochronologically to date them ...

Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds have modulated the formation of laminations in sediments in Lago Fagnano (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) over the past 6.3 ka

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 52, Issue 1, Page 124-138, January 2023., 2023
Tierra del Fuego in Argentina is a unique location to examine past Holocene wind variability since it intersects the core of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds (SHWW). The SHWW are the most powerful prevailing winds on Earth. Their variation plays a role in regulating atmospheric CO2 levels and rainfall amounts and distribution, both today and in ...

A review of multiscale numerical modeling of rock mechanics and rock engineering

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Multiscale numerical methods of rock mechanics and rock engineering are reviewed, and the review results show that more attention should be paid to the development of an advanced constitutive model in addition to numerical techniques themselves. Abstract Rock is geometrically and mechanically multiscale in nature, and the traditional phenomenological ...

Elevated temperature effects on swelling pressure of compacted bentonite

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
We present a set of new experimental investigations on the effects of elevated temperature on the swelling pressure development of compacted bentonite. This research was motivated by an emerging interest in using bentonite as a plug material in oil and gas well abandonment.

Compositional data analysis -- linear algebra, visualization and interpretation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Compositional data analysis is concerned with multivariate data that have a constant sum, usually 1 or 100\%. These are data often found in biochemistry and geochemistry, but also in the social sciences, when relative values are of interest rather than the raw values. Recent applications are in the area of very high-dimensional "omics" data.
