On the Competitive Ratio of Online Sampling Auctions
We study online profit-maximizing auctions for digital goods with adversarial bid selection and uniformly random arrivals; in this sense, our model lies at the intersection of prior-free mechanism design and secretary problems. Our goal is to design auctions that are constant competitive with F (2) .

Competitive Ratios for Online Multi-capacity Ridesharing
In multi-capacity ridesharing, multiple requests (e.g., customers, food items, parcels) with different origin and destination pairs travel in one resource. In recent years, online multi-capacity ridesharing services (i.e., where assignments are made online) like Uber-pool, foodpanda, and on-demand shuttles have become hugely popular in transportation ...

An Algorithm for Bichromatic Sorting with Polylog Competitive Ratio
The problem of sorting with priced information was introduced by [Charikar, Fagin, Guruswami, Kleinberg, Raghavan, Sahai (CFGKRS), STOC 2000]. In this setting, different comparisons have different (potentially infinite) costs. The goal is to find a sorting algorithm with small competitive ratio, defined as the (worst-case) ratio of the algorithm's cost

Santa Rosalia Reconsidered: Size Ratios and Competition [PDF]
Hutchinson's (1959) seminal paper, "Homage to Santa Rosalia or Why are there so many kinds of animals?" raised many issues that have subsequently dominated evolutionary ecology. One answer Hutchinson proposed to his question was that two species in the same trophic level can coexist if the ratio of sizes of their trophic apparati is sufficiently large,

Complex Dynamic Event Participant in an Event-Based Social Network: A Three-Dimensional Matching
In recent years, event-based social networks (EBSNs), such as Meetup, Eventbrite and Douban, have emerged as a popular new type of social network on which online users can organize and register for offline social events.

An Efficient Online Cache Replacement Algorithm for 5G Networks
In recent years, 5G cellular networks utilization has rapidly increased and is expected to grow even more in the near future. This will put the current cellular networks operators in a challenge to overcome the network's limits to satisfy the increasing ...

On the List Update Problem with Advice [PDF]
We study the online list update problem under the advice model of computation. Under this model, an online algorithm receives partial information about the unknown parts of the input in the form of some bits of advice generated by a benevolent offline ...

Sex‐ratio meiotic drive and interspecific competition [PDF]
AbstractIt has long been known that processes occurring within a species may impact the interactions between species. For example, as competitive ability is sensitive to parameters including reproductive rate, carrying capacity and competition efficiency, the outcome of interspecific competition may be influenced by any process that alters these ...
