Language as a Complex Adaptive System

2000
The paper surveys recent work on modeling the origins of communication systems in groups of autonomous distributed agents. It is shown that five principles gleaned from biology are crucial: reinforcement learning, self-organisation, selectionism, co-evolution through structural coupling, and level formation.

Self-adaptive Complex Systems

2012
Nowadays and in the near future, the complexity of computer applications is exponentially increasing. This complexity comes from the inherent properties of such applications: the great number of their involved components, the distribution of their control and skills, the nonlinearity of their process and their increasing openness.

Tourism motivation: A complex adaptive system

Journal of Destination Marketing & Management
This article discusses the history and status quo of traditional tourism motivation theories as well as their shortcomings. By adopting a collective approach to motivation, this study proposes a framework that examines tourism motivations from a complex adaptive system's perspective.

Complex Adaptive Systems

Annual Review of Anthropology, 2003
▪ Abstract  The study of complex adaptive systems, a subset of nonlinear dynamical systems, has recently become a major focus of interdisciplinary research in the social and natural sciences. Nonlinear systems are ubiquitous; as mathematician Stanislaw Ulam observed, to speak of “nonlinear science” is like calling zoology the study of “nonelephant ...

Complex Adaptive Systems

1996
Living systems, we all know, are alive, but what essentially is it about them that makes them so? What is the nature of living systems that distinguishes them from nonliving objects? How did they come into being? What properties do they possess that permit them to persist in a universe in which order is consistently replaced with disorder?

Complex adaptive systems

2007
The field of Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) is approximately 20 years old, having been established by physicists economists and others studying complexity at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico USA. The field has spawned much work such as Holland’s contributions of genetic algorithms classifier systems and his ecosystem simulator which assisted in ...

Complex Adaptive Systems

2018
The various groups at the Santa Fe Institute studying complex adaptive systems (CAS) have somewhat different points of view and have adopted different vocabularies. Some of us speak of "artificial life" or "artificial social life" or "artificial worlds," while others, of whom I am one, prefer to consider natural CAS and computer-based systems ...

Complex Adaptive Systems

2014
The previous chapter has already shown that the deterministic view of the earlier chapters remains insufficient to address the complexity at the higher levels of the systems hierarchy of Boulding. Building on this notion, the domain of complex adaptive systems believes that the dynamics of complex systems are founded on universal principles that may be
