Vibration Instability in a Large Motion Bistable Compliant Mechanism Due to Stribeck Friction

Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, 2018
The present paper investigates friction-induced self-excited vibration of a bistable compliant mechanism. A pseudo-rigid-body representation of the mechanism is used containing a hardening nonlinear spring and a viscous damper. The mass is suspended from

Mechanics in naturally compliant structures

Mechanics of Materials, 2007
Abstract In this study the mechanics of compliant structures (very light weight structures which do not have bending capability but have axial stiffness (tension)) in particular to spider web has been studied. The orb-web spider has evolved over the last 180 million years [Lin, L.H., Edmonds, D.T., Vollrath, F., 1995. Structural engineering of an orb-

Mechanisms of Compliant Shells

2019
Thin shells are three dimensional curved solids with a thickness that is small compared to the two other dimensions. For structural engineers, traditional rigid thin shells are some of the most efficient structural typologies. The curvature and continuity that characterizes them are the source of their high stiffness under loading.

Highly compliant active clinging mechanism

2016 IEEE Aerospace Conference, 2016
A mechanism is currently designed and analyzed with the goal of providing controlled adhesion to objects with surfaces with little known surface finish, of varying curvature, and different materials. The main purpose of the mechanism is that of ensuring a soft docking, controlled in closed loop, for attachment to large pieces of orbital debris.

SMA actuated compliant bistable mechanisms

Mechatronics, 2004
This article introduces the concept, analysis, as well as the design of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuated compliant bistable mechanisms. Compliant bistable mechanisms and SMA linear actuators have noteworthy advantages. When they are combined, not only their advantageous characteristics are preserved, but also some disadvantages can be eliminated. Thus,

Compliant Rolling-Contact Element Mechanisms

Volume 7: 29th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, Parts A and B, 2005
This paper presents three planar mechanisms capable of performing the functions of a bearing and a spring: the compliant rolling-contact element (CORE), the CORE bearing, and the elliptical CORE bearing. The designs use compliant rolling-contact joints to achieve low friction rotation and to bear high in-plane lateral loads.
