HISTORICAL DATA. The first accurate description of a subphrenic abscess was published by Bouchard1in 1862. In 1882, Leyden2reported several cases in which the diagnosis was made clinically. Maydl,3in 1894, collected 179 cases, which he divided into twelve groups, according to their cause. Among these were 23 following appendicitis.
