Compression failure of composite laminates
2016This chapter describes the application of a cohesive zone model to estimate the open-hole compressive (OHC) strength of composite laminates and to study the level-ply scaling effect on notch sensitivity. The modeling strategy is to replace the inelastic deformation associated with plasticity or microbuckling with a line crack and to assume some form of

INTELLIGENT TAILORING OF COMPOSITE LAMINATES
Carbon, 1989Abstract A number of major failure modes in epoxy-matrix composites are reviewed including free edge opening mode delamination, free edge interlaminar shear controlled laminate failure, and impact damage. Methods for suppressing these failure modes through various laminate tailoring techniques are discussed.

Non-conventional Composite Laminates – Clutch Laminates
American Society for Composites 2017, 2017This paper presents the design and manufacturing of novel non-conventional woven composite laminates coined as clutch laminates. Carbon/epoxy clutch laminates are manufactured using prepreg slit tape in an automated fiber placement (AFP) machine. The AFP process allows tailoring the material architecture resulting in innovative structures without the ...

Polymers and Polymer Composites, 1996
In order to enhance the stiffness and strength characteristics of wood, hybrid laminates consisting of spruce wood with (a) graphite-epoxy and (b) polyester-glass cloth were made. These hybrid laminates were tested for tension, three-point bending and cantilever bending to estimate the effectiveness of the lamination.

Stress Fields in Composite Laminates
International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1978A new theory is proposed to define the complete stress field within an arbitrary composite laminate. The theory is based upon an extension of Reissner’s variational principle to laminated bodies. Weaknesses in previous laminate theories are discussed and it is demonstrated how these are overcome in the present formulation.
