Failure criteria for composite slabs subject to extreme loading conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper is concerned with the ultimate behaviour of composite steel/concrete floor slabs under extreme loading situations, particularly those that occur during severe building fires.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Composites joints reinforced by composite rivets

open access: yes, 2018
This paper presents an investigation into the mechanical behaviour of composite joints reinforced by using a novel composite rivet made of rolled laminates. Two typical joints have been modelled using three-dimensional solid finite element model in the study.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Mechanical response of composite materials with through-the-thickness reinforcement [PDF]

open access: yes
An experimental investigation was conducted to identify the key geometrical parameters and quantify their influence on the mechanical response of through-the-thickness (TTT) reinforced composite materials.

Braided composite rods for civil construction applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The use of fibre reinforced composite rods as concrete reinforcement material seems to be an effective solution to overcome durability problems of traditional steel reinforced concrete structures.

Blood‐based proteomic profiling reveals context‐dependent changes in BCL2‐associated signaling during taxane therapy in breast cancer patients

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapy side effects significantly impact cancer survivors' quality of life. Using protein levels in blood samples from breast cancer patients before and after 12 weeks of taxane treatment, we detected treatment‐dependent changes in calcium signaling and aging pathways associated with cancer recurrence.

Why are natural fibres failing to deliver on composite performance? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The poor performance of natural fibres as composite reinforcements where the focus on chemical aspects has not yet delivered the "holy grail" of glass fibre replacement in volume applications is discussed.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...
