Thermostructural composite materials for liquid propellant rocket engines

23rd Joint Propulsion Conference, 1987
Since more than twenty years the possible utilisation of high temperature and oxydation resistance of ceramics was considered by rocket engines designers but brittleness and poor thermal choc resistance was a major disadvantage for those materials emergence.

Some new results of chuffing in composite solid propellant rockets

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1985
Chuffing is one of the low-frequency instabilities in solid propellant rockets functioning at low chamber pressures. In chuffing, the rocket motor experiences brief spurts of combustion and consequent pressure buildup, followed by periods of near ambient pressures in the combustion chamber.

Microstructural damage and fracture processes in a composite solid rocket propellant

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1995
A study has been made of the microstructural damage and fracture processes associated with the fracturetoughness behavior of a polymer-matrix composite solid rocket-propellant material. Specifically, nonlinear-elastic fracture-mechanics tests were performed, as a function of displacement rate and temperature (—54 to 71°C), on center-cracked sheet test ...

Generating Plateau Burning Segments for Composite Solid Rocket Propellants

Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, 2019
AbstractPlateau burning is a highly desired phenomenon for composite solid rocket propellants. Three composite propellant compositions were prepared in an attempt to generate plateau burning segments. In these compositions the curative type was changed along with controlling the coarse to fine ratio of the oxidizer particles.

Effects of Dual Oxidizers on the Properties of Composite Solid Rocket Propellants

2016
The microstructures and granular distribution of different oxidizers (AP, HMX, CL-20, GUDN, and ADN) were investigated. Several industrial and research types of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB)-based composite solid rocket propellants containing different dual oxidizers (with a fraction of AP in the reference formulation replaced by HMX, CL-20,

Optimisation and performance evaluation of an environmentally friendly rocket composite propellant

Indian Chemical Engineer, 2018
ABSTRACTThis paper investigated the effects of laboratory synthesised rocket composite propellants’ formulations on propellant performance parameters using response surface methodology (RSM). For the sake of a safe environment, the propellant is made of chemical constituents that have less severe effects on air quality.

Isocyanate‐Free and Dual Curing of Smokeless Composite Rocket Propellants

Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, 2012
AbstractTraditional composite rocket propellants are cured by treatment of hydroxyl‐terminated prepolymers with polyfunctional aliphatic isocyanates. For development of smokeless composite propellants containing nitramines and/or ammonium dinitramide (ADN), energetic binder systems using glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) are of particular interest ...

An Experimental Assessment of Soil Contamination by Composite Solid Rocket Propellants

AIAA SCITECH 2025 Forum
Since the beginning of the space era, solid propulsion has been considered an important technological asset for heavy launchers. Compositions based on ammonium perchlorate represent the current state of the art. The combustion of this class of propellant releases chlorine-based products, though.
