Advanced technology composite aircraft structures [PDF]

open access: yes
Work performed during the 25th month on NAS1-18889, Advanced Technology Composite Aircraft Structures, is summarized. The main objective of this program is to develop an integrated technology and demonstrate a confidence level that permits the cost- and ...

Detection and measurement of impacts in composite structures using a self-powered triboelectric sensor

open access: yesNano Energy, 2019
Composite structures as e.g. aircrafts, wind turbines or racing cars are frequently subjected to numerous impacts. For example, aircrafts may collide with birds during take-off and landing or get damaged due to the impact of hailstones.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The use of damage as a design parameter for postbuckling composite aerospace structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Advanced fibre-reinforced polymer composites have seen a rapid increase in use in aircraft structures in recent years due their high specific strength and stiffness, amongst other properties.

Three-dimensional FE2 method for the simulation of non-linear, rate-dependent response of composite structures

open access: yesComposite structures, 2018
In this paper, a two scale Finite Element method (FE2), is presented to predict the non-linear macroscopic response of 3D composite structures with periodic microstructure that exhibit a time-dependent response.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Atmospheric Structure and Composition

open access: yes, 2009
Titan's atmosphere is predominantly N2 with CH4 the next most abundant molecule. It has a mole fraction of 0.05 just above the surface decreasing to 0.014 in the stratosphere. Above the homopause (~800–850 km), it increases to 0.12 at the exobase. The third abundant molecule is H2 with a tropospheric mole fraction of 0.001 increasing to 0.004 at ~1000 ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
