Optimizing composting parameters for nitrogen conservation in composting
Bioresource Technology, 2008A central composite experimental design was used to investigate the influence of environmental composting parameters (moisture, aeration, particle size and time) for legume trimming residues, used on soil restoration, on the properties of products obtained (organic matter, Kjeldahl-N, C/N ratio and nitrogen losses (N-losses)) in order to determine the ...

COMPOST PRODUCTION AND COMPOSTED MANURE QUALITY EVALUATION
Acta Horticulturae, 2013Composted manure can have an important role in production of substrate for growing seedlings, which would make the organic waste management more cost-effective, but also decrease the cost of seedlings production. Production of composted manure is of significant importance for family farms as well and even more so for farms practicing integral and ...

The efficiency of home composting programmes and compost quality
Waste Management, 2017The efficiency of home composting programmes and the quality of the produced compost was evaluated in eight rural areas carrying out home composting programmes (up to 880 composting bins) for all household biowaste including meat and fish leftovers. Efficiency was analysed in terms of reduction of organic waste collected by the municipal services.

Compost supplementation with nutrients and microorganisms in composting process
Waste Management, 2017The composting is an aerobic, microorganism-mediated, solid-state fermentation process by which different organic materials are transformed into more stable compounds. The product obtained is the compost, which contributes to the improvement of physical, chemical and microbiological properties of the soil.

ASSESSING COMPOST PHYTOTOXICITY USING COMPOST ELUATES AND A COMPOST PLATE BIOASSAY
Acta Horticulturae, 2013This study compares the Zucconi test (ZT) and a plate bioassay (PB) to assess the possible phytotoxicity of two composts and assesses the possibility to determine the optimal rates of compost amendment to soil using PB. The TZ test was done using Lepidium sativum L., while for the PB test Hordeum vulgare L., Lactuca sativa L.

A fundamental aim of EC and UK waste policy is to make waste management more sustainable by moving it up the waste hierarchy, the emphasis changing from disposal to recycling and recovery. This approach is based on the concept of adopting the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) for individual waste streams and dealing with waste as close as ...

Home composter: Domestic use composter
2015 World Congress on Sustainable Technologies (WCST), 2015As urbanization grips the booming cities of India, the problem of waste is rapidly becoming an enormous, vicious repercussion. In a country as vast as India, with cities as spread out as Mumbai, decentralization is the most effective solution for a fast approaching waste management crisis.

Composting is a complex biological process which, when engineered and controlled, can deliver a high quality product which returns nutrients to the soil and improves its structure. This chapter looks at the fundamental processes which drive the composting process and then the key features which the process needs to deliver a quality product.
