Child Development, 1968
Children were given a comprehension task consisting of the selection of pictures to match active and passive affirmative sentences. The amount of semantic content was varied by substituting nonsense words into some, all, or none of the content word spaces in the sentence frame. The picture content was either familiar or unfamiliar.

An examination is an expression of policy. For better or worse, whether it is a course examination or a comprehensive, whether it is extramural or intramural, it exemplifies the philosophy of those who give it. It sets standards and establishes orientation, and therefore becomes a guide to the true expectations of the examining body, quite apart from ...

Abstract The access of idiomatic expressions was investigated in three cross-modal priming experiments. When the idiomatic string was predictable, subjects were faster at performing a lexical decision to idiomatically related targets than to literally related targets (Experiment 1).

Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2001
As with many cognitive feats that we perform countless times each day, making sense of what we read seems trivial and yet it relies on the successes of many smaller and less obvious cognitive acts. One such act, critical to our ability to build a coherent mental representation of what we read, is ‘anaphoric reference’.

The Mechanics of Comprehension and Comprehension of Mechanics
1992When people solve mechanical problems, such as troubleshooting, designing, or understanding the operation of mechanical systems, they typically operate on visual displays of these systems—either the machine itself or a schematic diagram of the machine. If the display is central to their problem-solving process, we can assume that their eye fixations on

Comprehensibility maximization and humanly comprehensible representations
International Journal of General Systems, 2012In this paper, we propose a new information-theoretic method to measure the comprehensibility of network configurations in competitive learning. Comprehensibility is supposed to be measured by information contained in components in competitive networks.
